Frequently Asked Questions
What to know about choosing a hike, preparing for altitude, bringing the right gear, and understanding how decisions are made on the mountain.
Choosing and preparing
Do I need previous fourteener experience?
Not for every route. Grays Peak, Torreys Peak, and Mt. Bierstadt can be appropriate first-fourteener objectives for hikers who have prepared for the distance, elevation gain, and altitude. Kelso Ridge and the Sawtooth Traverse require stronger experience and comfort with exposed terrain.
How fit do I need to be?
You should be able to sustain several hours of uphill and downhill movement while carrying a daypack. The exact expectation depends on the route. After registration, we assess your starting point and provide route-specific preparation benchmarks.
What if I live at low elevation?
You can still prepare effectively. Fitness does not eliminate the effects of altitude, but strong aerobic conditioning, realistic pacing, hydration, and an appropriate arrival plan can improve your experience. We will discuss altitude considerations during your preparation.
How personalized is the preparation plan?
Your plan is based on your chosen route, current activity, hiking background, available training time, and goals. It provides a practical progression and clear benchmarks rather than a one-size-fits-all checklist.
Can I ask questions while I am training?
Yes. The purpose of the preparation process is to give you useful guidance when questions arise, especially when generic online advice is conflicting or does not fit your circumstances.
What happens if I am not meeting the benchmarks?
Tell us early. We can discuss adjustments, remaining preparation time, and whether a different route or date would be more appropriate. Benchmarks help support an honest readiness decision; they are not a guarantee of reaching the summit.
Gear and logistics
What gear will I need?
You will receive route-specific guidance covering footwear, clothing layers, rain protection, water, food, sun protection, your daypack, and any additional items appropriate for the route.
Is personal gear provided?
Personal hiking equipment is not included unless a trip listing explicitly says otherwise. We help you understand what is essential, what is optional, and what should be tested before hike day.
Where do we meet?
Final meeting information is provided before the trip and depends on the mountain, trailhead access, and current conditions.
Is transportation included?
No. Participants are responsible for transportation to the designated meeting location unless a specific departure states otherwise. Parking or access fees may also apply.
What happens after I register?
You will receive the detailed questionnaire and next steps. We then review your starting point, provide your preparation plan and gear guidance, and schedule the readiness conversation before your hike.
Safety and the mountain day
What happens in bad weather?
Your guide monitors the forecast and conditions, but mountain weather can change quickly. The route, timing, or trip may be adjusted when conditions make the original plan unreasonable or unsafe.
Is reaching the summit guaranteed?
No. The summit is the goal, but weather, trail conditions, altitude symptoms, pace, timing, health, and other factors can require a turnaround. A well-managed decision is part of a successful guided experience.
Who makes turnaround decisions?
The guide makes final safety and turnaround decisions for the group. Participants are expected to follow guide instructions, communicate symptoms honestly, and respect decisions made for weather, timing, terrain, or group readiness.
Can children participate?
Suitability depends on age, maturity, fitness, prior hiking experience, the selected route, and the ability to follow guide instructions. Contact us before registering a child so we can discuss the specific trip.
How large are the groups?
Group capacity depends on the route. Standard hiking routes can accommodate larger groups than Class 3 routes, where more technical terrain and exposure require a smaller group.
Are these private trips?
No. Current departures are small-group experiences. You may be hiking with other registered participants who have selected the same route and date.
Changes and cancellations
Can I transfer to another date or hike?
Transfers depend on timing, availability, readiness, and the terms shown when you register. Review the cancellation and transfer policy for the applicable trip or contact us before making another booking.
What happens if Crest cancels?
If Crest must cancel a departure, we will communicate the available options under the trip's cancellation policy. Weather-related changes and cancellations are handled according to the terms presented at registration.
What is the cancellation policy?
The complete policy will be displayed during registration and linked in the website footer. Please review it before purchasing because preparation work begins soon after registration.
